This has by far been a very wonderful weekend- I must say that I have been enjoying myself, my family and my city, OH--------IO!!!! It's definitely interesting when you think about growing up in a place that you've been your whole life yet you still get excited about the events that you know are coming up and then there are those events that you find out about haphazardly but it's sooooo worth it! That sums up my weekend, why am I saying this: 1. Get to know Columbus, Ohio (it's Poppin') 2. I finally am getting out of the house (my babies ain't babies no more) #winning
Saturday:
Here's what we did this weekend & check out these amazing events (again) next year!
I am the part owner of a West African dance company titled GOREE Drum and Dance, we are always on the run dancing, drumming or both. This weekend we were able to participate cheering on our fellow drummers and dancers in the audience and that was AWESOME! It's empowering and inspiring all at the same time, this event took place during Columbus, Ohio's annual Independents' Day Festival . This a street festival that completely blew me by surprise, with live music, vendors, food and drinks! We walked to Strongwater which is in the center of the festival and also a local restaurant (we did not eat there but it's now on my "To Eat" list) to watch the presentation of the Columbus Invitation Arts Competition (which is a part of the festival). They presented five acts which consisted of Jazz, Choir, Theater and Dance. I was impressed by all presenters- if I would have had any suggestions, in regards to the location, it would be to have more seating. The venue inside was well staged and quite eye catching; there were all sorts of things for my kids to do like play video games and build robots all while my husband and I were watching the competition (we were still pretty close to one another, my Mom O.C.D is real)
Later on that evening my husband's country (he's Senegalese) celebrated Tabaski this past Monday so did the many local Senegalese in Columbus. When we arrived at the venue there was live drummers and a DJ that was playing all the new joints (NOT in English, but I was feeling the vibe, lol!)
Sunday:

We continued supporting the arts at a drum and dance workshop present by Ivy Pea and Mito. The combination of these two individuals is SPICEEEEEYYYYYYYY, if you love West African dance you will love them; hot steps and even hotter sounds coming off the Djembe. The drummers of GOREE Drum and Dance represented too!
All of these events are annual events, so definitely put these on your calendars for 2017! I'm learning and finding out that my family and I love to stay busy! Spending time with them outside of the house after a busy work week sounds exhausting for some but we're creating memories the best way we know how. It has not always looked like this for us but we are making the best of our situation now. I'm Looking forward to many more weekends, especially as the cool air moves in and Fall approaches.
So, what are you looking forward to doing in your city? or are you coming to Columbus? C'mon!
