Branding 101

If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got!

Sounds pretty simple, right!? Well, I think so- it goes right along with, "When you know better, you do better!" and that is my motto for the next week (or 2-3) especially while I am working on this business of mine Wrapologie. I am learning how to service my targeted audience all the while keeping my content rich, ideal, affordable and desired. This is a process that I am learning, and I am enjoying the ride (for now). The information that I have gathered thus far has been extremely useful, not only in my new start-up business but also in my Traditional West African Dance company of which I partner with my husband, GOREE Drum and Dance. If you are creating a business or are continuing one, you know as well as I do that branding is EVERYTHING! The theory behind learning how to brand yourself and truly sticking to the method is how (ridiculous) products like adult onsies will be around FO-EV-VAH! Interested in learning these steps, I know you are!!

C'mon- I got you...

First and foremost, just know that the early bird gets the worm! Everyone of my social media mentors on average starts their day off around 4 am. They do this so that they can accomplish more by adding a few more hours (awake) than you. It's like the folktale The Tortoise and The Hare, while you're sleep, others have already sent out emails, made flyers, choreographed a sequence and cooked breakfast before you wake up around 6:30/7 (the next person is running circles around you). The crazy part is, your ideas are just as good if not better- but you lack consistency, drive, intensity and sacrifice! You have to be dedicated to your passion, if you cheat on it (your passion) your relationship will take a toll, many times- until you treat it right! What do you do?

Step 1: Define your overall aspirations. ...Be specific and clear in your goals and objective

Step 2: Conduct research. ...What can you learn from what others are doing, good or bad? Who are your biggest competitors and what are they doing to brand themselves?

Step 3: Determine your brand attributes. ...What adjectives do you want people to associate with you (as the product) and why?

Step 4: Assess your current state. ...How do people currently perceive you? How large is the gap between the current you and the person you want others to perceive you to be? What needs to change and why?

Step 5: Create your game plan. ...Your game plan should include more than just branding yourself in social media – it needs to include all aspects of you, as a product. Your plan should include the tangible and intangible characteristics of personal branding including attire, hair, makeup, behavior, verbal and non-verbal communication.Your game plan also needs to include the specific social media aspects you’ll use to convey your new personal brand

Step 6: Manage your brand...Proactively manage all aspects of your brand, ensuring these aspects are in sync and that they continue to reinforce your brand attributes and market niche.

The best part of me sharing what I've learned is that I am still learning and growing. I lose nothing in telling you what I know and I not only hope that you will share with me what you know but I wish you much success on your journey. This is just the beginning for us all and if we continue to be of a resource to each other, we are definitely fulfilling the Nguzo Saba principle Ujima, collective work and responsibility, which sets us all up for success and wealth. It is my hope that I have at least sparked something inside of you while you are on your journey to branding yourself, however I also understand that everybody ain't ready!
