What Are YOU Going To Do About It?

On November 9, 2016 I, along with many of my friends were shocked (to some degree) that Donald Trump was elected President of The United States, more so he was elected as the President by way of The Electoral College as opposed to the popular vote or voice of the people. With that being said, first let me say that I am a numbers kind of gurl- so when the numbers weren't adding up, I had to dig a little deeper. So, in laymen terms, here is what I've gathered:

"When Americans vote for a President and Vice President, they are actually voting for presidential electors, known collectively as the electoral college. It is these electors, chosen by the people, who elect the chief executive." Google

Confused yet???? Well don't be! This basically means that Citizens of the United States do not directly elect the president or the vice president; instead they choose "electors", who usually pledge to vote for particular candidates. Now if that doesn't piss you off- you're flat lining! So now seeing that the numbers aren't really numbers anymore and letters represent colors- all of the sudden, I ask myself my most favorite question; I look myself in the mirror (seriously) and I say, and I quote, "What are you going to do about?" Understandably, I am no Politician nor do I want to be, but I am a citizen (naturally-sort of) and I do have a right to allow my voice to be heard and or felt. So in the not-so-much-spare-time, that I don't have, I have compiled an answer my question and I pulled it directly from the 7 Nguzo Saba Principles:

1. UNITE. The dictionary states that the definition of Unity is the state of being in full agreement. So, are we or are we not in full agreement that there is something unfair about voting but not really voting? Are WE not in full agreement that we have had enough of this? Well, I believe that we have not been inconvenienced enough, not to the point of true disgust. When I look over our past demands for justice- NOTHING else mattered; except keeping our eyes on the prize. In my daily walk I plan on maintaining a commitment with like-minded individuals who are seeking to progress the power back to the people through my participation in programs for adults and our youth in many different facets of aiding and or educating within my community.

2. BE SELF-DETERMINED. If you don't believe in yourself, no one else will! Self- determination is a a combination of attitude & abilities, it's the "magic" that we have have been hearing and or talking about lately. It's this "magic" that drives people to set goals for themselves, and to take the initiative to reach these goals. If you really feel that you have nothing to offer, dig deeper- we all have been blessed with different gifts and talents to offer this world!

3. COLLECTIVELY WORK TOGETHER. We have to break the cycle of not wanting to work with each other because we either don't produce in a timely fashion, we don't like that person or we simply never meet the expectation of what was initially offered. We also need to make a conscious effort to educate others on what it looks like to work together and how to solve problems among one another.

5. SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER. If we don't make a conscious effort to support the businesses within our communities, they will disappear. With that being said, No you cannot get a discount, No you cannot pay someone later but expect a service now, No you cannot maintain status within a group and or company without paying ON TIME. Businesses do not grow off of "likes" there is a financial need to keep it functioning, so if you want to stop supporting these huge corporations that do not know you, don't support your views/ community, then take the money out of your pockets and place it willingly into the of those who you know, will get the job done, don't be scared - have a conversation before the transaction and then PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE & SUPPORT, SUPPORT, SUPPORT!

4. HAVE PURPOSE. Purpose simply means, the reasons for which something exists. So let me ask you, "Why are you here?" If something is stopping the continuation of what you do or why you are here, then what do you do? Does you purpose matter so much to you that you will speak up or shut up?

5. BE CREATIVE. Is that not the first step to change?... coming together collectively and sorting all ideas of the creative minds to form one cohesive action? Creativity is relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work. Creativity oozes out of our pores daily, are you even listening or paying any attention to it? I urge you to be creative in your part of assisting us all in the progression of the people.

6. HAVE FAITH. Faith does the hard work for you! Literally Faith says, "Step aside!" In this time we need more Faith than ever before because if you don't believe in something you will fall for anything. When people are afraid, hurting and or alone it is not the work of a Politician to come and fix it, it is the job of the faithful people to speak life into those who have given up or are in the process of giving up.That's why it is important that WE the people have faith in our community and in it's rebuild #eachoneteachone #sankofa Our history tells us that we are resilient, but we're so far (mentally) removed from the struggle and the victory of the struggle that we are numb, yet moving in different directions. Have faith that this moment will ignite us to come together as a powerful force to catapult us into another dimension, one that stands for ALL.

When I hear people say, "No matter who would've won, someone would've had something to say!" That is very TRUE, there would have been someone mad about this election no matter who was elected. However, this post is not because my candidate didn't win, I am more so upset with the fine print that rears it's ugly head when the "Big Boys" don't get their way, you feel me? My continued focus has been and will continue to be on the more important issue on who we vote into office on the Senate & local levels because they have the power to to try cases of impeachment of federal officials, should such officials be impeached by the House of Representatives and to "advice and consent" appointments made by the President. It is time that we come together in the spirit of Umoja to mobilize and have relationships with people, it is through the rebuilding of relationships that we ultimately will be able to rebuild- imagine then, what would happen to the government? More importantly, in regards to our current state of affairs, What are you going to do about it?
